Three Stages of GC

July 11, 2009

a word from neighboring Bishop and friend to East Carolina, The Rt Rev’d Porter Taylor, Bishop of Western North Carolina

I have found that the General Convention has three stages: the greeting, the great bewilderment, and the convergence. These happen over the ten days, but they also happen within one day or even one meeting. First is about meeting. We see old friends; we meet new friends. It’s like going to college as a freshman. You find your dorm and your classes, and figure out who all these other people are and who you are in relation to them. This part has been wonderful. Being on a Legislative Committee means you work very hard with strangers and you become a community over the Convention.

A Rather Intense Schedule

Hello East Carolina!!!  I have enjoyed seeing the Los Angeles area.  We went to Disneyland (on our own time, on our own dime), and we closed the park… staying until midnight.  I do love roller coasters!  So there has been time for some fun.

However, we have now begun a rather intense schedule.  There are many committee/commission/ministry hearings, which may run from 7:00am-9:30am; 2:00pm-4:00pm; or even 7:00pm-10:00pm.  Your deputation has Tess Judge, Larry Overton, Tom Holt, and the Rev’ds John Pollock and Peter Stube serving on various committees for The Episcopal Church.  This means that they serve with a large group of laity, bishops, priests, and deacons to hear proposals for resolutions; to review resolutions; and to prepare them for presentation to the House of Deputies and the House of Bishops.  Each of the other deputies and alternate deputies who are here are following a particular ministry’s hearings.  I’m covering Evangelism.

A Post from Bishop Daniel

There is first, the daily round of legislative sessions, committee meetings, worship including small services as well as a daily Eucharist for the entire Convention, special events, etc. A brief look at the (filled) General Convention daily schedule will give a good idea of how a Deputy or Bishop’s day is spent in the main. My Packing List

July 3, 2009

And, suddenly, what seemed so far in the future, is NOW!  I’ve actually been preparing for General Convention for a long while–keeping up with Church news online and in print, following several blogs and list serves, poring over the “Blue Book” and going over the so-far-submitted resolutions on the Episcopal Church website.
