WYS ain’t WYG

Newspaper coverage is interesting to those of us who are actually in the rooms while legislation is being debated. This week, Episcopalians in both Houses of this body took up some pretty interesting stuff. There is an amazing evangelism project which will provide support to developing and supporting Latino churches. We’ve updated disciplinary procedures and rules. Yesterday, we dealt with a serious budget crisis which will bring about drastic and dramatic changes in the ways in which ministry is undertaken in this church. We also watched and sought to care for shocked people in our midst as some church center staffers realized their jobs are coming to an end. In the midst of such pain, our church recommitted itself to mission in numerous ways, and yesterday the House of Deputies carried a provincial acceptance of the recent Anglican Covenant.

Jumping the Communication Hurdles

Oh, my communication ears are ringing today!  I have seen communication at its best today.  And even though the conversation is a bit difficult at times, the way in which the communication happens has truly shown the beauty of The Episcopal Church and of communication done right.

Lots to Do and So Little Time!

July 13, 2009

Hi East Carolina!  I am enjoying my time at the General Convention (the good, the bad, and the ugly!).  We are behind on the calendar now, meaning that we have resolutions to hear today that should have been heard days ago.  I understand that this lagging is typical.  East Carolina has a mind now to pick up the tempo, so we will be calling the question after a bit of debate or testimony has occurred.  ”Calling the question,” means that the House of Deputies would then vote to immediately end debate and return to the main motion.  You can also “call the question on the amendment and on the original motion.”  That’s very useful, too!

I have seen the House of Deputies during some intense conversations.  And I have seen, in every one of these audiences, many different forms of communication. It all feels thought out and every aspect well considered.

Live from LA…

July 11, 2009

For this General Convention, Episcopal Church Center staff members in communication and information techs  have developed an amazingly powerful tool for everyone to use: The Media Hub. Want info on an upcoming piece of legislation? Want to see this morning’s sermon? Want to hear people share in legislative hearings? See what’s happening right now? All this and more awaits you. You’ll find the media hub referenced in our blogroll on this page for a direct link, or type this into your favorite browser: http://gchub.episcopalchurch.org/

Just A Few Thoughts from Bishop

July 5, 2009

A Post from Bishop Daniel

I want to share some thoughts with you as I prepare to leave for Anaheim this coming Saturday. First, I’m excited to prepare to attend my seventh General Convention (my fifth as Bishop), and I am honored once again to take my place in Convention as Bishop of our blessed Diocese of East Carolina.

For me, this will be a busy General Convention (All of them are!). There is first, the daily round of legislative sessions, committee meetings, worship including small services as well as a daily Eucharist for the entire Convention, special events, etc. A brief look at the (filled) General Convention daily schedule will give a good idea of how a Deputy or Bishop’s day is spent in the main.
