Traces of the Trade viewed during convention

February 5, 2010

Director Katrina Browne spent the morning with the participants of the diocesan convention showing her film “Traces of the Trade.” This film examines Ms. Browne’s heritage and it’s link to the slave trade industry in the North.

The film invited response from members in the audience who where eager to share their own experiences. One member stated, “One thing I love about this church is our nature of call and response.” Another explained her interaction with a young lady who held judgement on people she had never met. “True prejudice,” she explained, “is judging people before we meet them.”

The movie calls, not only for a chance to look retrospectively, but also for each person to take the time to look for actions to take in the future. Repentence is not just saying you’re sorry, but also “experiencing the anger of those who have been hurt by racial injustice,” explained The Most Rev. Frank Griswold, 25th Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church.

Ubuntu and You: A Young Adult Perspective on General Convention

I am not a person who sleeps before trips.  The excitement of travel, especially to a new destination always captivates me and leaves me too fueled with energy to even consider the idea.  Reading my status updates on Facebook in the early morning on Sunday July 5, anyone could clearly see I was more than excited for my upcoming adventure to California, a mission to learn more about the inner-workings of our church and to manifest Ubuntu theology by living, learning, and worshiping together in a community of more than 15,000 Episcopal clergy, youth, young adults, and lay deputies.

Excited, nervous, and way too busy- these are all my descriptions for the days preceding today. Emails have been flying between friends – old and new. Reunions are planned and surprise meetings anticipated. As to the schedule, I still do not know how to read it!

Puzzle Pieces

July 1, 2009

After working on the Diocesan Convention Committee for several years, I have discovered that I am that oddball who just loves convention.  I love seeing the Diocese as a whole come together to worship, work, and have fun together.  I often use the analogy of a puzzle.  Each parish is a piece of the puzzle of the Diocese of East Carolina.  At convention you get to see how each piece fits into that puzzle and what the whole picture looks like.  This is how I envision General Convention, just on a grander scale.  I am excited to see how the Diocese of East Carolina fits into the puzzle of The Episcopal Church.
